Interview with SHS Lacrosse Player Katie Ling

Welcome back to the Spring Edition of Off the Reels! This week, I am featuring an athlete who
loves her pressure-filled position in front of the net.

Meet SHS Lacrosse Goalie Katie Ling…

Lacrosse story:

In third grade, Katie’s neighbors encouraged her to try lacrosse, and she has been playing ever since. She said lacrosse “has given me a life focus.” Katie trains, practices, and competes year-round. She works hard to fulfill her lifelong dream of competing in Division I college athletics. In the meantime, you can find her protecting the goal for the Panthers.

Katie on being a goalie:

I was curious as to what Katie likes and dislikes about being a goalie. Katie loves being the last line of defense for the team and all the pressure that comes with it. In addition to performing well under pressure, Katie likes that she has the opportunity to make big saves and change the direction of a game. Her only complaint about being a goalie is all of the bruises from shots.

What goes through Katie’s head when a shot is coming:

In addition to physically saving the shots, goalies have to be mentally tough. When I asked Katie what she thinks about when a shot is coming toward her, she answered with no hesitation: “nothing.” Katie’s dad taught her to not think, but to react. She explains that she’s like a dog looking for a squirrel when a shot is coming at her; instinct takes over.

Katie’s superstitions:

On game days, Katie eats the same breakfast, wears the same shirt, and uses the same lucky hair tie. What started out as her lucky charms now help her mentally prepare and get in the zone.

Katie’s favorite thing about playing for the Panthers:

Katie told me that as she reflects on her time playing for the Panthers, she cannot pick just one favorite memory. Each story ties back to her first days on the field; she has played with many of the same girls since elementary school. Katie loves that her team has grown up together, growing as a family and supporting each other on and off the field.

How Katie leads her team:

As a senior and as the goalie, Katie naturally holds a leadership position, and I asked her how she handles it. In her words, “I try to lead by example with my commitment to playing and practicing year-round.” Katie is always working hard and encourages her team to do the same by showing them what hard work looks like. Katie also works with the other seniors on her team to foster a positive team atmosphere and to plan activities to bring the team closer together.

Katie’s role model:

Katie has looked up to her dad and wanted to be like him for as long as she can remember. Katie’s dad taught her how to play lacrosse when she first decided to pick up a stick, and he inspired her love of sports. He also played college and professional hockey, prompting Katie’s dream to follow in his footsteps and play a sport at the collegiate level.

Katie’s plans after high school:

Katie’s hard work is paying off, and her dream is becoming a reality! In the fall, she will attend Niagara University where she will play DI lacrosse and study business.

Katie’s advice for lacrosse players/athletes:

Katie is able to fulfill her dream because of how hard she works, and she encourages other athletes to do the same. She said,“challenge yourself to play the toughest competition possible, and to try your best every single day.” She also noted that a good attitude is essential!

Good luck the rest of this season, Katie! And, go Eagles!
