Interview with SHS Wrestler Hayden Hollis
Meet SHS Wrestler Hayden Hollis…
Wrestling story:
Hayden started wrestling in second grade, and he’s currently competing in his senior season. His older brother wrestled, and Hayden looked up to him, so he wanted to wrestle too! When Hayden was younger, he also played lacrosse and football, but he decided to stick with wrestling because he enjoyed it the most, and it was his best sport.
Hayden’s accomplishments:
Hayden is a four year varsity wrestler at one of the best programs in the area. He was a Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) Champion and a State Qualifier his junior season. I can’t wait to see how successful Hayden is this season!
Weigh-ins:
All sports require physical fitness, but wrestling takes it to a whole other level. Wrestlers compete in their weight class, so they have to maintain a certain weight every time they compete. This can’t be easy, so I asked Hayden what it was like. In order to maintain their weight and compete, wrestlers engage in lots of intense workouts, lots of sweating, and an occasional skipped meal.
Something most people don’t know about wrestling:
Hayden said most people don’t know about the huge time commitment that is required to become a good wrestler. Moreover, discipline is essential to maintaining your wrestling physique.
Hayden’s leadership:
Hayden is a captain on the wrestling team, and he is also the team’s Panther Athletic Council representative. With these titles comes great responsibility. Hayden takes the responsibility in stride, and leads his team by example.
Pros of an individual sport within a team sport:
I’ve talked to many athletes that play an “individual” sport within a team sport, and I always ask them what is difficult about it. This time, I asked Hayden about the pros of wrestling as an individual sport within a team sport. I love his perspective. He said, “everyone has a different style, and each style helps you get better as an individual.” Sometimes individual sports can be challenging, such as when your personal outcome conflicts with that of your team, but watching others compete and trying out different styles to better yourself is a great opportunity.
Hayden’s favorite thing about wrestling for the Panthers:
Hayden loves his coaches and the support system around him and his teammates. He also noted that this is what he is going to miss the most when his Springboro Wrestling career comes to an end in a few months.
Hayden’s plans after high school:
In the fall, Hayden plans to attend Ohio University where he will study Sports Medicine.
Hayden’s advice for wrestlers/athletes:
“Just work hard. Work as hard as you can all the time.” Hayden is a man of few words, but his wrestling accomplishments are proof that hard work is the key to success.
This Thursday, December 23, Hayden and the Panthers compete against Lebanon at The Battle for the Rock at Springboro High School. Good luck to them this week and the rest of the season!
