Interview with SHS Hockey Senior Jake Hutchinson

Image
This past weekend was a tough one for the Panthers. The Panthers were on home ice, but faced two tough opponents, New Albany on Friday and Olentangy Liberty, currently ranked ninth in the state coaches' polls, on Sunday. The team is working hard despite the fact that the bench is even shorter now due to injuries. They look to bounce back this weekend with three games. On Friday, the Panthers will take on DeSales at home. On Saturday and Sunday, the Panthers are on the road to face off against Bishop Watterson and Dublin Jerome, respectively. This weekend, I sat down with first-year player and senior Jake Hutchinson to hear his behind the scenes scoop on being a Panther.  Meet #9 Jake Hutchinson…  Hockey story: Jake has always loved the game of hockey, but this was his first year actually playing it. I asked him about the inspiration behind the decision to start playing hockey in his senior year. He traced it back to a conversation at Taco Bell with a fellow teammate, Braden Houser.

Interview with SHS Hockey Senior Jordan Babb

The Panthers started the weekend with an overtime win against Worthington Kilbourne. They then had some tough games against St. Charles and Upper Arlington, two of the top teams in the state. The Panthers are taking a break from the road trips for a week. They are set to play Beavercreek on Tuesday, New Albany on Friday, and Olentangy Liberty on Sunday, all at South Metro. This weekend, I talked with Jordan Babb to hear his perspective on playing for the Panthers.  Meet #64 Jordan Babb… Hockey story: Jordan’s hockey story is pretty unique. During his sophomore year, the Panthers needed a backup goalie, and Tyler Conte had the perfect solution. Tyler texted Jordan just a few days before the first game asking him if he wanted to play hockey. It did not take much convincing before Jordan took on the role as the backup goalie. He has played the past two seasons as a forward.  Being the backup goalie: Jordan did not have any hockey experience until his first game two seasons ago. With a gre

The Panthers spent their long MLK weekend in Columbus competing in the Pioneer Classic where they earned third place! Over the course of four games and three days, the Panthers put 11 pucks in the net against Bishop Watterson, Dublin Jerome, Linsly, and Olentangy. In between games, I sat down with the leading scorer of the Panthers to talk everything hockey.  Meet #27 Alternate Captain Danny Murrow... Hockey story: Danny started playing hockey when he was three years old. His parents took him to a Learn to Skate event, but he was not all that excited. Once he started skating a little bit more, Danny truly fell in love with hockey and never turned back. He has played for the CAHA Junior Cyclones (three years), Indian Hill (one year), and the Tri-State Spartans (four years) before his family moved to Springboro. This is his third year as a Panther.  Favorite memory with the Panthers: Danny’s most memorable moments with the Panthers are off the ice. From going to B&B after practices o

The Panthers spent most of this weekend on the ice. After losing on Friday night, they bounced back with a 3-1 win over Alter on Saturday, and they took St. X to overtime on Sunday, ending in a 1-1 tie. Goals this weekend came from Tyler Conte, Tristan Schroeder, AJ DeRosa, and Ryan Schroeder. This week, I sat down with Alternate Captain Tyler Conte to talk about everything from hockey injuries to Red Bulls.  Meet #13 Alternate Captain Tyler Conte... Hockey story: Tyler started playing hockey when he was six years old. He was playing soccer at the time, but he quickly became more interested in hockey while watching his older brother on the ice playing for the Panthers. Tyler didn’t think he was very good when he first started skating with Timbits Hockey. He even considered quitting but stuck it out and skated every year since. This year, he’s earning his fourth Varsity Letter as a Panther.  Tyler’s injury: Tyler played with an injured shoulder for almost two seasons. He waited to fix t

The Springboro Panthers Varsity Hockey team rang in the New Year with a Senior Night win on January 2 against the Sycamore Aviators. Danny Murrow, AJ DeRosa, Tristan Schroeder, and Chris Scherer all found the back of the net, scoring six goals for the Panthers.  As of January 3, the Panthers have played 17 games (5-12). The Panthers Brotherhood is made up of 15 players: five seniors, three juniors, four sophomores, and three freshmen. The team is led on the bench by Head Coach Tony DeRosa and Assistant Coaches Kyle Miklas and Brady Smith. On the ice, the team is led by Captain Ryan Schroeder and Alternate Captains Danny Murrow and Tyler Conte. I interviewed Ryan Schroeder to get the inside scoop and perspective from this year’s Captain. Meet #6 Captain Ryan Schroeder... Hockey story: Ryan started playing hockey in second grade when a friend of his dad’s who was a huge hockey fan asked him if he had ever considered having Ryan play. Ryan’s parents were from California and they didn’t kn
Welcome to Off the Reels! I grew up in Ohio, which might make you think I love football. I truly love all sports, but I’ve grown up at the ice rink. This blog is dedicated to my personal favorite sport to watch: hockey! With Off the Reels, I’ll be sharing updates behind the scenes of Springboro High School Hockey.
